A NEW BLUEPRINT FOR CARE
Metrodora Institute is a destination medical center located in the beautiful state of Utah, opening early 2023. Our primary focus is on the care and cure of conditions affecting multiple body systems that fall under the umbrella of neuroimmune axis disorders. Examples can include neurological, immunological, autoimmune, post-infectious (e.g. long-COVID), gastrointestinal (microbiota-neuroimmune axis), and connective tissue disorders. Some of these have names, and others do not.
At Metrodora Institute, patients have access to the very best diagnostic tools along with novel therapies in all of our clinical areas. Patients are also uniquely connected to leading-edge science and technology through partnerships with global leaders in biotech and biopharma. This includes next-generation genetic sequencing technologies, deep immune profiling, clinical trials, and extensive research studies. Metrodora Institute also supports broad access to healthcare through advanced telehealth and digital health system platforms to offer treatments, education, and the continuity of specialist-driven care once a patient returns home.

The 55,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility includes a Center for Advanced Interventions offering routine and complex gastrointestinal and neurogastrointestinal procedures, vascular studies, and pain therapies; a Center for Neurology offering advanced autonomic testing and novel therapies such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the treatment of depression, PTSD, and pain disorders; a Center for Infusion Medicine; and a Center for Heath Creation featuring advanced technologies and clinical experts offering the most advanced and effective physical, occupational, and cognitive therapies.
INNOVATING CARE THROUGH
Central to the institute is our newly-created, transformative research program that is focused on discovering better diagnostics, therapeutics, and ultimately cures for individuals suffering from disorders of the neuroimmune axis. Our research team consists of geneticists, immunologists, neuroscientists, biophysicists, microbiologists, machine learning engineers, and data scientists. The research team seamlessly partners with our clinicians and patients to revolutionize research in this area. With our collaborative model of care, our clinical practice adjusts as we translate discoveries from the bench to the bedside. To drive this revolutionary research, we have created the first biobank and data repository focused on disorders of the neuroimmune axis.
Metrodora Institute forges innovative partnerships with prestigious academic institutions as well as leaders in the biotech and biopharma industry to leverage the power of advances in science and technology in order to develop new tools to accelerate research. We understand that getting the correct diagnosis requires utilizing the best diagnostic tools and for many disorders, they have yet to be developed. Our research priorities are addressing this fundamental gap to develop next-generation diagnostic tools along with enhanced therapeutics and ultimately cures.
A NAME WITH A PURPOSE
Metrodora is named after the first female physician to author a medical text (4th century AD), "On the Diseases and Cures of Women", which at the time significantly advanced women’s health. We seek to continue this tradition.
Our founding team is composed of world-renowned physicians, scientists, and technology leaders, positioning Metrodora Institute as a world leader in the space of neuroimmune axis disorders and women’s health equity.
Laura A. Pace MD, PhD,
Co-Founder and CEO of Metrodora
Dr. Laura A. Pace is a Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Metrodora. Laura is a Neurogastroenterologist with board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, and from the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties in Autonomic Disorders. She has been a leader in the rare disease space for many years and for the past several years has served as the Co-Lead for the adult program for the University of Utah NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Network (NIH UDN) clinical site, Medical Board member for Dysautonomia International and Chair of the Gastrointestinal Working Group for the International Consortium on Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders. Laura has a BS in Chemistry from Stony Brook University, a MD from the University of Illinois Chicago, and a PHD in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has advanced research training in the areas of neuroscience, microbial physiology, evolution, and genetics, as well as analytical chemistry, studying host-microbe interactions. Additionally, she has advanced clinical training in medical genetics. She has published over 80 peer reviewed journal articles and has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and private foundations.
James Hemp PhD

Dr. James Hemp is a Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Metrodora. James is an interdisciplinary scientist with over 20 years of research experience spanning biology, chemistry, physics, genetics, and medicine. He has published over 40 peer reviewed journal articles and has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and several private foundations. James received a BS in Honors Physics from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in Biophysics and Computational Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was a prestigious Agouron Postdoctoral Fellow while at Caltech.
Fidji Simo, Metrodora
Co-Founder & President of the Metrodora Foundation
Fidji Simo is a Co-Founder of Metrodora and President of the Metrodora Foundation. She is Chief Executive Officer of Instacart and was previously the Head of Facebook App. She brings a wealth of expertise across business, technology, and advances in artificial intelligence that will position Metrodora as the most innovative research institute on such diseases. Fidji has been recognized by Fortune as part of their “40 under 40” annual ranking of most influential young people in business. She was also #2 on Fast Company’s 2017 list of Most Creative People in Business. Fidji was diagnosed with dysautonomia in 2020 and is committed to using her skills and large platform to cure these diseases.
